Hello everyone. When my wife and I build our house, it will be built on 1 hecatre. We plan on having a big landscaped front lawn. In the states you can buy grass sod by the squares to put on your lawn. Does the philippines have anything similar to that? And if so, where exactly can it be found. _________________ I am currently 41 years old. My wife of 4 years is from bohol. We will build there when I`m 50. |

I guess the answer may be dependent on your location.
Where I am from, Leyte, the 2 most common grasses are bermuda, and a coarse running type, called Carabao grass.
I have not seen places that will sell in squares, as you stated, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I think I did see grass seed for sale at the newer hardware stores (Leyte Home Depot, no association with the one in the USA).
In any event, I would think you would want the type that spreads by "runners", and bermuda and carabao grass does just that.
When we needed to plant some grass in a small area, we just put "plugs" and let nature take it's course, and soon the grass had spread and covered the ground quite well.
Best advice, is plant what others are using, as trying something else will usually result in failure. |

What exactly do you mean by runners? What do you think is best, runners or plugs. _________________ I am currently 41 years old. My wife of 4 years is from bohol. We will build there when I`m 50. |

Runners or stolens are how certain grasses spread. It sends out "shoots" that will then produce roots, and become independent of the original clump.
I believe plugs, are a method of planting a lawn, and would need a grass that has a method of propagating itself usually by runners. So as far as terminology goes, one would plant using "plugs" of any type of grass that can spread by producing "runners".
Here is a picture:
And here is a quick explanation
The runners of bermuda grass are the most typical feature that people recognize. It is also the most common reason why they don’t like it. Common bermuda can be very invasive. It puts down roots from the nodes or joints as it spreads, which is why it is difficult to pull up.
This same tendency however is an advantage for areas where the lawn is prone to develop bare spots from kids, pets or certain activities. Bermuda grass is one of the few grass types that can self-repair a lawn.
Hope it clears it up. |
